Registration opens at 10 a.m. today (January 21, 2019) for classes during the second half of 2019. Note that the registration form now requests (but does not require) a phone number. It would be helpful to provide that (and to double-check your email address); we’ve had a few emails bounce back…and if I can’t get in touch with a student after repeat attempts, I have to cancel the registration – which I hate to do. We’ve a plethora of woodworking classes on offer for the second half of 2019 – most of them from visiting instructors (some from far, far away).

In most cases, classes are limited to six students (the number of benches we have available, plus one for the instructor) – so the instructor has plenty of time to pay attention to you…whether you want that or not!

The storefront (837 Willard St., Covington, Ky., 41011) is located just south of the Covington, Ky., MainStrasse entertainment district, in a safe neighborhood with lots of food and drink options, as well as accommodations at various price points, from inexpensive Air BnBs to an awfully nice hotel (that honestly isn’t pricey by most big-city standards), all within walking distance.

Registration opens at 10 a.m. Eastern on January 21 for the classes below (click through to each for a description). Registration is free on Eventbrite (and I strongly recommend signing up for the waitlist if you don’t get into the class you want – cancellations do happen). About three weeks after registration opens, I send each instructor his or her class list, and you are billed by the instructor (not by Lost Art Press or me – unless it’s my class, of course).

And as I’ve written before, this is not a woodworking school; it’s a woodworking shop in which some classes are taught. Christopher Schwarz runs not only the editorial side of Lost Art Press out of the space, but also his own furniture business, and he kindly allows both Brendan Gaffney and me to use the space for furniture work as well. The classes are a lot of fun…but they are also a lot of work – amidst the other work – which is to say that while we’ll still have some in 2020, we will not be able to have as many. So if there’s one you’re eyeing below, be ready at your computer on Jan. 21 at 10 a.m., and type quickly (they do tend to fill quickly).

I’m working right now on getting the list together for classes during the second half of 2019 (which will be posted in January), but we do still have a couple of earlier opportunities remaining due to cancellations. In calendar order, they are:

Brendan Gaffney’s Feb. 4-8, 2019, “Starting with Staked Furniture” class has two spaces available. “Students will build a simple staked bench and a staked chair using a hand-tool oriented tool set. The chair is a new design, which can be made with three, four or five legs based on the student’s preference (five legs is shown in the photograph above and furnishes the most practice and learning opportunities!). This class will revolve around the classic chairmaking skills, taught in a way comfortable for woodworkers of all abilities and backgrounds.”

Update: This one is now sold out (but do sign up for the waitlist if you’re interested!). Brendan’s March 30-31, 2019, “Høj Footstool” class has one space available. “This simple footstool is an easy way to introduce two basic chairmaking skills – making a simple post-and-rung construction and weaving a danish cord seat. The class will be broken into two parts; on the first day, students will build the footstool itself using simple techniques (well suited to non-chairmakers and chairmakers alike) and on the second day students will learn the “no-nail” method of weaving a Danish paper cord seat.”

Brendan’s May 18-19, 2019, Build a Krenov-style Handplane class has one spot available. “The laminated handplanes designed (and made famous) by James Krenov are as practical and fun to make as they are a joy to use. In this two-day class, students will make their own standard (45°) or York (50°) pitch smoothing plane and learn to sharpen, maintain and use these wonderful tools.”

I know it looks as if we’re running a woodworking school, but when classes aren’t going on (which truly is the majority of the time), the Lost Art Press storefront is Christopher Schwarz’s working woodshop and publishing office where he develops furniture ideas for new books, and works on editorial and design for upcoming titles. (And he generously allows Brendan Gaffney and me to hang out there and produce shavings, too.)

But the classes are a lot of fun…so we’ve added a few more for 2019, including several from Chris, who’s easing back into teaching after a couple of years of taking it easy (on that front, anyway), along with some guest instructors (including Roy Underhill, and the return of Chris Williams from Wales!). Plus, we’ve added a handful of one-day, three-day and week-long classes. Almost all the classes have room for no more than six students, so you get a lot of personal attention from the instructor (whether or not you want it!) and his or her assistant (which is often Chris, Brendan or me). Plus, you can try out our tools (well, I volunteer mine, anyway) and seven different bench forms, and relax (as time allows) in the Mechanical Library or in the biergarten. And there is usually a group dinner and visit to a local watering hole. In short, it’s a great time.

This Friday (Oct. 12) at 10 a.m. Eastern, registration goes live for the January through June 2019 classes listed below (we’ll announce July-December classes in early 2019). Click through to each to read the full descriptions. If you’re interested – and I hope you are – I recommend being poised at your keyboard at 9:59 a.m. Eastern; these tend to sell out quickly. But do sign up for the waitlist if you don’t get in right away; life happens and things change. And if you can’t make it for a class, the storefront (837 Willard Street, Covington, Ky., 41011) is open on the second Saturday of every month from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. for all your Lost Art Press book needs, woodworking questions, tool instruction and more.
