SOLD: This is an early version of Stanley’s No. 48 tongue-and-groove plane. This one dates to pre-1900 and is in pretty good shape for a user. I’ve sharpened the cutters and everything works as-advertised.

Like many of these planes, the swinging fence is a bit wobbly from a century of use. But it locks down just fine for use. And the joints it makes line up perfectly.

If you are collector, please don’t buy this tool. Has it been re-japanned? I can’t tell. It looks original, but I don’t get worked up about things like that. The rosewood knob is beautiful. The tool works. That’s the story.

SOLD: This tool has an odd story. My parent company, F+W Media, purchased this tool about 14 years ago to use in photo shoots for Jim Tolpin’s landmark book “Measure Twice Cut Once.” If you haven’t read this book, please do. It’s one of my favorite.

In any case, this gauge is on page 54 of the revised edition, which was printed in 1996. After its moment of fame, it lay dormant in our shop for five years or so until the company disposed of it during a sale of excess office equipment. I picked it up for $50.

However, I didn’t need a mortise gauge (I had one), so I stashed it away in my tool chest at home and found it a few weeks ago while I was cleaning. It has never been used. The brass parts are patinated, but there is no wear on the tool.

Want it? You can have it for what I paid for it. By the way, it is marked with a “B,” which means it’s a blemished model.

SOLD: This was my first real plough plane, which I purchased from Ray Iles about 10,000 years ago. I used this plane for all my drawer grooves until I switched to a wooden plough.

This Record 043 is in excellent working order. It includes the three stock irons (1/4″, 3/16″ and 1/8″), which are fully sharpened and ready to go. Heck I even have the original stock cardboard sleeve for the irons.) All the plane’s controls work perfectly. There is not a spec of rust on the tool and it has most of its original plating.

SOLD: I bought a fair number of these English joiner’s mallets as I was learning about the form. This one has seen a fair amount of use in my shop.

These tools are nice because they have a metal shell that is bound around the striking faces. I believe the striking faces of this mallet are lignum. One of the two striking faces has a chip missing from its edge.

The tool is 12″ long overall. The handle is oak.

SOLD: This plane is not for collectors. There is almost no nickel plating left on the body, but it is tuned, sharpened and ready to work.

The plane measure 1-1/8″ wide with plenty of life left in the iron. I’ve completely flattened the sole (it was a mess), and the iron is sharp. All the controls work perfectly. Users won’t be disappointed. Preston planes are one of my favorites.

But it’s not much to look at.
