Just a few of the Lie-Nielsen tools from my Anarchist’s Tool Chest (there will be shinier LN tools on hand for you to try out next Saturday – as well as the fine folk from LN to answer questions).

It’s time for Open Wire, our almost-every-Saturday woodworking question and answer session! Next week, however, Open Wire will be in-person only at the Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event here in our shop. So if you have questions and can’t make it to next weekend’s shindig, ask now in the comments section below.

Note: Brevity is appreciated.

Note 2: Chris has an afternoon engagement, so he’ll circle back to later questions after comments close to answer any I’ve missed…or that I’ve willfully skipped (i.e. most chair questions, or queries about the amount of chromium in a 5/8″ rounding plane plane).

It has been a crazy chair week here in the shop…so no different than usual (except we had eight people working in here instead of the usual two). So today, we’re happy to take it a little easy and answer questions at the computer.

I finished this small chest yesterday…almost! (I’ll do the last bit today, in between questions.)

Chris is also getting ready for a class that starts Monday, and I’m getting the class pages ready for the July-December 2024 classes (they’ll be announced soon!)…and finishing one last thing I forgot about on the chest interior shown above: a plane cubby. One simply must have a plane cubby. So there may be lag between your question and our answer.

Today, we are delighted to have Andy Glenn, author of “Backwoods Chairmakers,” here to answer your woodworking questions – particularly those relating to post-and-rung chairs of the Appalachian region, as that’s the core of his new book. But, he’s a long-time woodworking teacher who trained at North Bennet Street School, so he’s certainly qualified to answer on many woodworking topics (ask him about his CNC*). And in case you have questions about any of our books, videos, tools etc., I’ll be checking in from time to time to answer as needed. As always, there will sometimes be a lag between your asking and our answering.

And I thought this might be of interest: If you want to make a greenwood ladderback chair (aka post-and-rung chair) but have no access to appropriate logs, or the simply don’t have the time to split out your own stock, Andy sells chair kits on his site. And, here’s a link to his teaching schedule for 2024.

But you can learn from him now: simply post your woodworking questions below. Comments will close at around 5 p.m.

Jan. 27 Open Wire with Andy Glenn

Chris will be presenting in Colonial Williamsburg this weekend and I’m up to my hairline in work – so we asked Andy Glenn, author of “Backwoods Chairmakers” (the most recent book release from LAP) if he’d like to take a Saturday stint of answering your woodworking questions. Reader, he said yes!

Andy is a fount of knowledge on post-and-rung chairs (particularly those from the Appalachian region), but he’s well-schooled (and not just metaphorically!) in all areas of woodworking. He trained at the North Bennet Street School (NBSS) before working in furniture repair shops, cabinet and furniture shops, and a wooden boat repair shop. For more than a decade, he’s taught continuing education classes at NBSS and has been a guest instructor in the Cabinet and Furniture Making program at his alma mater. For several years, he was also supervisor of the Woodcraft Program at Berea College Crafts and ran the Woodworking School at Pine Croft.

So get those questions ready for Saturday! As always, the post will go live at around 7 a.m., and comments will close at 5 p.m. – and there may be a lag between your questions and Andy’s answers (I believe he has an ice skating commitment mid-day).
