Finding a chair’s crest in a blank. When I design a new crest it’s a gradual process of slicing away curves and angles. The end result looks more complex than the simple operations that created it.

Megan (@1snugthejoiner) and I are huge fans of @johnmoreland, and now that we are fully vaccinated we are going to an outdoor concert of his in Lexington next month. To celebrate, I got us these DeKalb hats that Moreland sometimes wears. The hat looks terrible on me (I’m a winter).

It feels like I started building this chair during the Carter Administration. I’ve been building this chair in slow motion as I write “The Stick Chair Book” in case I need photos or to remember some nuance about saddling or assembly.

Today on the blog I discuss the excellent inshave from Lucian Avery, which was designed with help from @sawyer_made. It’s a great inshave for stick chairs.

If you know me, you know I am suffering great personal pain in this photo. But what else is new?

Whenever I write a book I check all my written sources to make sure I’m aware of all the techniques out there and I don’t have blind spots I need to remedy.   In reviewing the literature on saddling seats I found these two methods I haven’t tried – a circular saw movings sideways.
