SOLD: Here are two good user chisels with two interesting stories. I’m only selling these as a pair. Sorry to be a pain.

The Butcher chisel is 5/8″ wide and is a tool that I have had forever. It is fully set up and ready to go — though the edge has a small nick out of it. Hone it before you use it.

What’s interesting about this tool is that it has been cryogenically treated. When cryo first came into vogue I sent this tool (and several others) to a cryo lab for a deep cryo treatment. The idea was to see if I could tell any difference in the durability. I got the tool back and have used it for many years. It is just as durable as it was when I sent it out.

The other chisel is a 1″ Swedish Bahco chisel with a red plastic handle. For years, people told me about the legendary properties of Bahco 956 chisel steel. It took me months of searching, but I finally acquired this chisel off eBay.

It’s a fantastic chisel. Holds a great edge. Comfortable handle. Why am I selling it? These chisels are too hard to find for mortals and I have plenty of chisels.

SOLD: Since 2007 Steve Nisbett has been re-engineering vintage planes to the point where they are better than new. And perhaps just as good as new premium planes, in my opinion.

I bought this Dunlap small smoothing plane from him last year (read the blog entry here). And the tool is totally as-advertised. It is like factory new. Nisbett reworked all the surfaces so they are flat within the tolerances used by premium makers.

On the bench, the tool performed great. There is only one apology. The tool will not close up its mouth aperture super-tight with the stock iron. If you add a thick Hock iron or a Lie-Nielsen iron (something I recommend regardless), then the mouth closes up fine.

As it is, this tool is ideal for mild hardwoods. Upgrade the iron and you are ready for anything.

This is a great tool. Add a premium iron and you’ll have a lifetime user.

SOLD: Ultra-modern Stanley block planes stink. But this is not one of the stinkers. I bought this plane in 1996, right before the great plane apocalypse. This is a fine worker with a Hock blade (which cost almost as much as the plane itself).

I’ve tuned this low-angle tool up pretty well. The sole is flat. The iron is prepped (it does need a honing). So it’s ready for woodworking, as opposed to rough carpentry.

I hate to see this one go. But it needs to.

SOLD: This is a classic English marking gauge. The wood is bound in brass. The beam is solid brass. And the locking mechanism is a single screw surrounded by a brass escutcheon.

There are about five lifetimes of sharpenings left on the pin (which is sharp).

When I purchased this from an English tool dealer years ago, the seller stated this was an ebony gauge. However, a few years on my bench confirmed that this was likely a beech gauge that has been stained black to look like ebony. So it’s *not* an ebony gauge.

Otherwise, this gauge is awesome. The head locks onto the beam like crazy. The thing has enormous presence in your hand. And the brass faces are nice.

But I have too many gauges.

SOLD: This is a solid 12″ carcase saw from the Cincinnati Saw Co. that has been sharpened by saw savant Daryl Weir. The saw is wicked sharp, straight and ready to work.

I acquired this saw at a Mid-West Tool Collectors meet and had it fixed up by Weir. It’s filed crosscut at 14 points per inch and is better than any sharpening job I could manage.

The blade has some stains and a little pitting in one spot — though it’s nothing that will affect how the saw cuts. The tote is likely apple. The only apology is the toe has a very small bite out of it. It’s an old blemish and perhaps has been filed to look “natural.”

This is a fine worker.
