SOLD: I purchased this English Preston & Sons tool from Pat Leach in 2005 to experiment with the form. I already have several tools used for making chamfers, but I wasn’t sure how this one works.

It works quite well. I’ve set the tool up. The back of the iron is polished. The bevel is sharp. If you know anything about the tools that Mr. Leach sells, then you know that this is not junk. It’s almost too nice to be a user.

The tool has a Ward iron. The bronze/brass chamfer guide is stamped “Excelsior.” The toe is stamped with the Preston shop mark as well as the retailer: “T. Underwood, Tool Dealer, Bradford.” The wedge might not be original, or it might have been modified, or it might be how the tool came. But it does have some toolmarks on it.

The body has two short hairline checks, but nothing I’d be alarmed about on a tool this age.

SOLD: I have always liked this Colen Clenton gauge. This one is in perfect condition, the cutter is sharp and the head locks tight and square to the beam. But I have so many gauges that I need to thin the herd.

This gauge is the Australian Blackwood version (I think — it has been many years and I’m no expert on Aussie woods).

SOLD: This hollow auger works great and has all its parts. It is, however, quite grungy and has almost none of its original black japanning. And it has some surface rust.

In other words, this is a pure user-grade tool. When chucked into a brace, the Woods auger cuts round tenons from 1/4″ to 1-1/4″, which is ideal for chairmaking. This is the brand preferred by most chairmakers.

The iron needs some attention. I’ve been using it as-is for years. So the back is not polished and the bevel is untouched.

SOLD: I bought this unusual shave at a tool meet and the seller told me it came from a patternmaker. But who knows?

I do know that it is well made, comfortable in the hands and heavy. The sole measure 2-1/4″ x 2-3/8″ and is flat. The iron is 2″ wide and I’ve prepped the blade. The back is polished and the bevel is sharp. Overall the tool is 12″ long.

Both the iron and body are marked with the name of the user/maker: D.M. Dustin.

I used this shave to make chamfers on my work, something I now have a chamfer shave for.

SOLD: I bought this No. 59 doweling jig back in 1993 when I started becoming serious about woodworking. The jig worked great, but it was missing some of the bushings. So I ordered all the bushing sizes direct from Stanley — 11 in all.

The No. 59 comes with its original box, all the new bushings and an extra clamp (not sure where that came from, but it is correct). The only apology is that the jig has a small chunk out of it, but it does not affect the function in any way. The plating is fundamentally intact as far as I can tell, but this is not a pristine model for a collector — it has too many miles on it and too much life left in it.
