We have Derek Jones in the shop this week to teach a two-day class in French polishing, and Derek has generously agreed to give a free short demo on the process at 2 p.m. Saturday at our Covington, Ky., storefront.
Derek is the editor of Furniture & Cabinetmaking Magazine and runs the Lowfat Roubo site, where he sells tools and offers courses in the U.K. This is his first trip to the United States, and after the class here he heads to the Marc Adams School of Woodworking to teach two courses.
Derek is a wiz at French polishing and an outstanding teacher. His process focuses more on the results than historical dogma. I think you’ll be amazed.
The demo will begin at 2 p.m. Our storefront is at 837 Willard St., Covington, KY 41011.
If you are interested at all in finishing, you don’t want to miss this.

They grow Derek Jones cabinet makers in England. One of the finest was a Derek Jones who was a senior furniture conservator for Parks Canada in their Halifax, N.S. conservation lab. He came to Canada after his apprenticeship in England many years ago. He did remarkable work and taught wood turning on his Holtzapzzhel lathe in Merrickville, Ontario for several years after he retired.. He was living in Brockvile, Ontario when I last chatted with him 8 years ago.. He’d be pushing 90 by now.

That would be well worth a trip. I wish I could.
I’ll stop down if I can.
