I’ve long known about the Maison de l’Outil in Troyes, France, but I have not had the chance to visit. Yet.
Reader Sebastian Gonzalez found this short video – in English – about the history of the museum, its collection and its more than 30,000 books on tools and crafts. The video even highlights Juliette Caron, the first female compagnon carpenter in France (I collect postcards related to her).
The video is worth a watch.

Wood Is Good
Very cool museum and collection. Love the building itself.
Thanks for sharing.
I hope you had all those postcards you wanted. The prices just skyrocketed 🙂
Excellent video.
Thanks Chris.
What a cool place! Field trip!
Well made video – dig it. This kinda goes with a book I was just reading with my kids tonight, “City: A Story of Roman Planning and Construction”. My two little minions (and I) thought it was amazing what people did with their hands, backs and a few tools.
Thanks for the video Chris.
Wow, that’s actually quite close to me… I should visit some day.
Wow, wonderful. Thanks for sharing that Chris.
What other places would you visit when you go to France?
Several years ago, I dragged my wife to the Maison de l’Outil. She really enjoyed it, much to her surprise. We also visited the town of Thiers and its knife making museum. Unfortunately, wet weather precluded a visit to knife grinders themselves.
