Great news: We are honored to welcome back Lie-Nielsen Toolworks to the Lost Art Press storefront for the first Lie-Nielsen Hand Tool Event since before the pandemic! Details on the event from Lie-Nielsen are here. (The company’s 2024 Hand Tool Event schedule is here.)
Details:
Friday, Feb. 23, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
Saturday, Feb 24, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Location:
Lost Art Press
837 Willard St.
Covington, Ky. 41011
Admission is free, and there is an abundance of free street parking within walking distance of our storefront.
Lie-Nielsen will have its full line of tools on site for you to try out, and company representatives will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate hand tool techniques. (And with a few exceptions, any Lie-Nielsen tool ordered at the event will get free shipping.)
And of course we’ll be here too, with our full line of books and tools.
Please note that the event will be held at our storefront on Willard Street – not our warehouse at the Anthe building on Madison Ave.
Awesome! So glad these are back! Was always a great opportunity to try things out to see how they fit and feel in your hands etc
Ooooo. Any chance of an old-timey bout of fisticuffs between Thomas and Chris!?! No plans on losing the day job.
I won’t be there, but am compelled to give a hearty “welcome back!” to the LN tours.
Yay! I’m glad the L-N Tour is back, and happy you guys are hosting. If it wasn’t a 13 hour drive, I’d go.
Although . . . They practically drive right past me on their way. Ask if they can swing by and pick me up. Tell them I’ll help unload.
Awesome – looking forward to it!
My goal in life is to able to go to a Lie-Nielsen Handtool Event by stepping into my shop.
I’m looking forward to this. I’ve heard about these events but never made it to one.
Will the LAP team also have books out for sale?
Yup. Our full line of books and tools will be out. And we likely will have some blemished books that will be for sale at half price (cash only on blems).
Plan to be there 2/23. John McCall
Slightly related question: has Lie-Nielsen ceased exporting to Europe? I have not been able to find a source for LN this side of the Atlantic, all distributors are sold out until further notice…
Cheers for any insight!
You will have to ask them, I’m afraid.
According to what I hear from some of dealers here in Europe, they have been getting stock from Lie-Nielsen again for about a year now, although not always in the quantities needed to keep up with demand.
A quick look shows that for example the Lie-Nielsen #4 Smoothing Plane in ductile iron is currently in stock at Baptist in The Netherlands and at Classic Hand Tools in the UK, but out of stock at Rubank Verktygs AB in Sweden and at Dictum in Germany.
It is also perfectly possible to order directly from Lie-Nielsen, as they ship internationally. Postage is more expensive, of course, and there will be import duties and VAT to pay, but on the other hand the basic price is lower.
Another quick check shows that if I were to buy this plane from Baptist today I would pay €453.90 including postage to Belgium.
From Classic Hand Tools it would be £349.17 with the UK VAT deducted, plus £25 postage ≈ €440 on top which would come 21% Belgian VAT plus customs clearance fees of about €95 making the total cost something like €535.
Directly from Lie-Nielsen, the plane costs $340 and the least expensive postage to Belgium that they offer is $108.67 ≈ €481, to which would again come VAT and customs clearance fees to the tune of some €100, making for a total cost of maybe €585 or so.
In other words, it depends on how desperately one wants a particular item, but if it is not that urgent, and one is prepared to wait for an item to be back in stock in order to get the best price, Lie-Nielsen are definitely delivering to their European dealers again.
A hot tip, by the way, if you are interested in Lie-Nielsen tools, and are not too far away from there, is the Baptist Weekendshow in Arnhem in The Netherlands on May 25–26. According to what it says on the Baptist website, Thomas Lie-Nielsen is going to be there together with Curtis Turner and, one assumes, a good selection of Lie-Nielsen tools. Tickets (which are limited in number) went on sale yesterday, and seem to still be available. I had planned to go there myself, but then got an invitation for a friend’s 60th birthday in Sweden the same Saturday, so shall have to give it a a miss. Bother. But friends are more important than tools.
Cheers,
Mattias
Apologies: I multiplied the price direct from Lie-Nielsen with the dollar/euro rate, instead of dividing. The price direct from them, with postage to Belgium would be +/- €415 to which would come about €90 in VAT and fees, making the total cost something like €505, so about €50 more than buying from a dealer in the EU.
Thanks a lot, Mattias! I think I will get in touch with Dictum, which would be the most convenient source for me as a German in exile, but also explore the option to order directly from LN.
Hilsen fra Norge 😊
