Work on my next book, “The American Peasant,” has slowed my chairmaking a bit, but it hasn’t stopped me. I have six more chairs in the works right now.
Today I am offering this low-slung comb-back in ash. This chair is completely set up for lounging, and is about as comfortable a comb-back as I can make. The seat is low-slung – 15-3/4” off the ground, like old stick chairs. The seat tilts 5° back and the back tilts 17°. This chair is designed for long and comfortable sits.
The sticks are shaved and left faceted. And the short sticks were left slightly proud off the saw and then burnished to give the feel of the older chairs.
Like all my chairs, this one is assembled with animal glue, which is reversible should it ever need repairs. The finish is soft wax, which does not provide much protection but is easily repaired and develops age quickly.
I am selling this chair via a random drawing for $1,800. That price includes shipping the chair anywhere in the lower 48 states of the U.S.
Purchasing the Chair
If you wish to buy the chair, send an email to lapdrawing@lostartpress.com before 3 p.m. (Eastern) on Friday, Jan. 12. Please use the subject line: “Ash Chair.” In the email please include your:
- U.S. shipping address
- Daytime phone number (this is for the trucking quote only)
We will pick a name via a random drawing. If you are the “winner,” the chair can be picked up at our storefront for free. Or we will crate it and ship it to your door. (I’m sorry but the chair cannot be shipped outside the U.S.)

This is a beautiful chair. I am struggling to find Qtr Sawn 4/4 ash for my own chair. It’s unobtainium!
CR Muterspaw lumber in Xenia, Ohio, has a stack of it as big as a car.
Gorgeous as always. Chris I think an interesting post would be the prep you do for a chair that doesn’t involve actually touching wood. Like what, if any, drawings do you do ahead of time? I read the stick chair book but don’t remember something as clearly written as: “I start with a sketch like $x and tweak from there” or whatever. Just an idea
Chris, beautiful chair out of one of my favorite woods: ash. Great job!
May I please have the arm height and back height?
Thank you
The arm is 24″ off the floor. The comb is 36″ off the floor.
Those Motawi tiles in the fireplace surround always make me smile.
Such a beautiful piece!
I am curious…how many entries do you normally receive for this type of raffle? Or is this considered a trade secret?
Depends on the chair. On the low end, about 10-12 entries. When we did a bog oak chair it was 85 or more.
Perfect! I like my chances!
‘assembled with animal glue’. At what point will you switch to your Piggly No Wiggly Glue? Or, do you not recommend using it on chairs?
I’ve been using Piggly No Wiggly on my chairs for a year now. Piggly No Wiggly is animal glue (pig).
I deduced that it was not hide glue when you called it “animal” glue. But I thought the animal was a bear—Ursus Gummiferous, to be precise.
My I ask how you burnish the end grain of the short sticks?
With a fine chainmail pot scrubber.

Thank you! And I forgot to mention earlier that your chair is gorgeous!
