Today we’ve released the revised edition of “The Stick Chair Book” on better paper and at a lower price than the original: $47. In addition, the pdf of the book is now a free download forever. No need to register or give up your email for any spammy marketing techniques. Just click this link and it will download to your computer.
Don’t believe it? Try us.
Of course, we hope you will order the physical book. Like all our books, it is made in America with a sewn binding and cloth-covered hardbound boards. But if you can’t afford the hardback, or you aren’t sure if stick chairs are for you, download the pdf and (I hope) enjoy it.
If you forget about this blog entry, the link to download the pdf is on the product page for the hardbound book – right at the top of the description.
The revised edition of “The Stick Chair Book” is 10 percent shorter than the first edition, but it contains the same information. The same techniques. The same five chair plans. Same dork-a$$ sense of humor. During the summer, I rewrote the entire book to streamline the language and fix a few typographical and factual errors. (Why did I do this? The answer is on page 17 of the book.)
The print job of this press run is particularly spectacular. It is gratifying to see the images in the rich colors I intended. Pandemic shortages forced us to use a paper for the old edition that was very expensive and not very vibrant.

Very generous, as always. I’m still buying the physical book.
Amazingly generous, indeed. LAP hardcovers are a joy to hold and behold.
I bought the early adopter package when it came out and the hard copy when avaliable. I love how generous LAP is to the community. Instead of “Stupidly Unrealistic since 2007″ you should say “Amazingly Generous since 2007”. Thank you for all you do at LAP!!!
Is “anarchist capitalist” a thing? I think you might be one. If so, that’s the best kind of capitalist.
Wow that is super nice of ya Chris
But I have the red book and being a printer myself, recognize a well made book. Will wait on the second supplement edition when ready.
Thanks so much for this generosity. As I saved this PDF away, I found that I had already downloaded “The-Stick-Chair-Book-REVISED-Consumer-July-2023.pdf” … a much smaller file, but with the same page count. Can you remind me/us of what the difference is? Should I just toss the July version in favor of today’s?
I believe the July one is the same; just a smaller file size. So you’ll be able to see more detail in the newer, larger one.
Thank you, very much, and I can assure you when the new version arrives in Dictum I’ll get a copy!
This is one beautiful book!
Thank you for the opportunity to download the revised Stick Chair Book. I purchased the original and will use the revised edition as needed. As always, an easy and professional approach to woodworking. Lou
I liked page 17 in the First Edition.
Good for you!
Thank you.
‘Inspirational’ is the word that comes to my mind You make things true to your interests and ideals, and you share the information freely. Free downloads, open source designs and all the free snark one cares to consume. Thank you. As a capitalist I will continue to vote with the dollars I can spare
thanks! as i mentioned at handworks, I’ve got about half the books y’all have published including a couple out of print. still haven’t built my first chair yet– though i did build the staked desk in adb and enjoyed that!
OBTW I’m still not getting the blog in my email. if i need to sign up again for that, I’m happy to.
Darn classy. i’m too chicken to build one, but i got a very old kid’s rocking chair that needs repair. I’m sure this will help. Cheers
That’s awesome. I’m still waiting to receive the instructions for the secret handshake and/ or hoky poky dance awarded to merit badge recipients. Is that encoded in the book somewhere on p 17, or..42?
Thank you Chris, hope this will expand on all I learnt from your chair making dvd I bought years back. Very generous of you.
What an incredibly generous offering, thank you Chris, Megan and the LAP team.
I finished my first chair this summer and had my copy of “The Stick Chair Book” alongside me all the way. For years I’ve contemplated/dreamed of making a chair that I could be proud of and with your help I’ve finally done it. My chair isn’t perfect (and I like it that way!) but I learned such a lot from making it and the sense of achievement is beyond words.
Thank you.
Thank You. Much appreciated.
Thanks for the offer. I can’t seem to download. It starts and then doesn’t go on.
The link it fine. Just check. Try a different browser. Turn the computer on/off. Hold your tongue different.
I paid for the pdf when it first came out.
I then bought the physical copy when it came out in the UK.
I am not disappointed that they are now free/cheaper.
Go download it. Make a chair, then buy the book to really delve in and make notes.
Thank you Lost Art Press for your beautiful books and your inspiration.
Thank you, this is very generous of you.
Thank you!!! I bought the book, but loaned it to my son-in-law. Now I don’t have to make an awkward phone call.
I don’t understand the reasoning behind this. I purchased two hard copies of the original, but now am aware I could have saved a good amount of money by just waiting. You note in a September 10th posting that you make no money from LAP. Why then , are giving things away for free. (Although the new edition of The Stick Chair Book is 10% shorter but supposedly has the same content ?????????). Should I be under the impression that I should postpone my future LAP purchases because they
will eventually be free?
Hi Andy,
I have stated many times that it is my goal to give away as much information as possible. This is part of that.
Feel free to send the book back to our offices: 837 Willard St., Covington, KY 41011, and we will gladly refund your money.
Thank you very much. You are an inspiration.
I did purchase the 1st edition and finally downloaded the revised edition and read the updated page 17. I feel like a bit of a dickhead given my previous comment above. Thanks for the amazing work you do and have done over the years. I hope you are ok and doing well!
