Thank you to Eric Stockinger, director of the WoodenBoat School in Brooklin, Maine, for his kind review of “Sharpen This” in the May/June 2023 issue of WoodenBoat Magazine.
“If only there had been some simple guidebook to sharpening 30 years ago, I might have saved a whole lot of trouble and money,” wrote Stockinger.
“Sharpen This, by Christopher Schwarz (Lost Art Press), is exactly that: a guidebook to the confusing world of sharpening hand tools. In 114 informative pages, Sharpen This briskly manages to do what some books four times as long have not: explain in simple terms what a sharp edge is, and how to go about creating one.”
You can read Stockinger’s “Sharpen This” review in its entirety in Issue 292, available now at the WoodenBoat Store.
Thanks Megan! We’d love to have you up to teach a toolbox class someday!
Maybe a Floating Dutch Tool Chest ?
I can ‘second’ what a good, simple and informative book this is! I bought it earlier this year because every time I asked friends about sharpening, I got conflicting and confusing answers. AND a plug here for the Wooden Boat store as well…I bought a great, inexpensive shop apron from them as well as a shoulder plane. Good products at good prices.
Just ordered Sharpen This, it seems to be my kind of book. A KISS book, Keep It Simple Stupid. Tools that aren’t sharp not only are dangerous they produce poor results.
I have the book and video . They are excellent! All the info on needs, in one place.
Like many others before, I bounced around trying a lot of “perfect way to sharpen your tools in only minutes” systems and never could get to a point, pun intended, that I could consistantly make a tool sharp enough. I bought the book and it saved me many hours of frustration and now I feel confidence every time I start to loose an edge.Money well spent.
