We’re selling this cherry comb-back stick chair with a chunk of the proceeds going directly to The Chairmaker’s Toolbox to help the next generation of chairmakers and toolmakers.
I built this chair during the scholarship class last week in our workshop. It’s made from black cherry and is set up for general use – dining and keyboarding. It has nice (but not aggressive) lumbar support. The chair seat is 16-1/4” off the floor. The overall height is 37-1/4”
All the mortise-and-tenon joints are assembled with hide glue. The finish is a non-toxic blend of linseed oil and beeswax made in our workshop.
Because this chair was made in a fast-paced environment where I was juggling teaching and building chores, it has a few cosmetic flaws. But it is structurally perfect. Straight grain for all the legs, sticks and stretchers. Tight joints. Nice hand-shaped surfaces.
Purchasing the Chair
This chair is being sold via silent auction. (I’m sorry but the chair cannot be shipped outside the U.S.) If you wish to buy the chair, send an email to lapdrawing@lostartpress.com before 3 p.m. (Eastern) on Thursday, July 21. Absolutely beautiful.
I know cherry is harder to deal with when making these: but it really is my favourite.
Wonder if my friend in upstate NY would be willing to make a sprint across the border to bring it to ottawa LOL
When thinking about the chair for keyboarding or writing, it might be helpful to mention the height and width of the arms. Some desks have a narrow well, and some computer tables are set low or have keyboard drawers. (I’ve tended to avoid armchairs for that reason unless the arms are adjustable or removable.)
I wish we could ship chairs to Canada. The one time I tried I ended up losing $800 and the chair was damaged. No one in the shipping chain would take responsibility. And yes, it was insured….
Cross border shipping is a complete gong show at the best of times: I had a box of woodworking supplies get stuck in customs for 2 or so months. Meanwhile a second shipment from the same supplier was shipped a day after and hit my porch in 2 days flat.
I do understand that its impossible to ship the chair but thanks for mentioning your own horror story ($800 lost: yikes)
The scary part: my dear friend in upstate NY is perfectly happy to receive the chair and ‘assess it’ if I win the bid. And as such: email will be sent later tonight. ROAD TRIP! 🙂
No you visit friend for at least two days (higher limit before duty coming back) and have a copy of the invoice for the price. Can’t believe duty on furniture is that high. Did the same in reverse when I bought a drainboard sink in Canada, US subsidiary had told me ” we don’t manufacture drainboard sinks” when I had sent the URL from a Canadian supplier of exactly what model what I wanted.
Border officials both ways are perfectly familiar with the idea, and if you offer an invoice when you announce you have something to declare sometimes they decide the money they would collect isn’t worth the paperwork.
Absolutely: and my friend needs some woodworking help (we actually met when he took a class from me years ago: another reason I miss teaching: meeting marvelous new people) so maybe I can help him in the workshop for a couple of days. MORE incentive to bid on the chair! LOL
What a Chair for a Chair dream !
Dang, that chair looks amazing! I’d bid if I could afford to, but it’s just not in the budget for now. Perhaps once I’ve tried my hand at a stick chair or two, I’ll scrounge up the funds for some cherry and make a nice one of my own.
