You might want to check the shipping settings for the dovetail marker. It provided “media mail” as a selectable shipping option when purchasing just the marker.
I must admit, it’s rather frustrating to have your cart “updated” and the item suddenly sold out, just as you’re completing the purchase. I was really looking forward to one of the dovetail templates.
Wow, 22 minutes and the dovetail templates are sold out. I’m gonna have to be faster next time.
I beat you by 4 minutes and it was still sold out. I may have made it if I wasn’t distracted by those pinch sticks!
Add me to the list of shocked that they went so fast. I’ll be watching for when they become available. Congratulations on producing another winning product.
First, I have a number of nice Crucible tools and use them, but my Public Relations thoughts are that LAP/Crucible Tools should have sufficient and larger numbers of new items, especially the new DT guide, in stock to satisfy the anticipated high demands for it, and not just release a “teaser” few for the lucky that beat the lottery odds of ordering one successfully. The rest and majority of us, who have been checking the website daily several times or more for the release, are frustrated in tool limbo once again. I really would prefer to wait several more weeks before a item is released so as to have a reasonable chance of ordering an item and not the “small number” as released today. This happen regularly each time LAP/ CT releases a new tool item. Just my thoughts and it is likely that many others share my sentiments.
Cheers.
Hi Michael,
I do understand the frustration, but running a small-batch business is tough. Sometimes a tool doesn’t sell much at all. There are several Crucible tools that have never gone out of stock – we are still on our first run. So we don’t know what will sell and what won’t. If we made 1,000 before we launched and only a handful sold, we’d be sunk.
Also, are tools aren’t scarce for long. We are usually able to get capacity up to where we can keep things in stock within a few weeks. This is because when we see there is interest in a tool, we invest in fixtures that increase capacity. We just dropped $4,000 on a fixture that will allow us to make these templates 6x faster. That fixture wouldn’t have been cost-effective if these sold more slowly, like the pinch rods, for example.
I hope this makes sense.

The pinch rods sold slowly? Inconceivable. It’s a really sweet little gizmo. Pretty, too.
Yup. I love them. But they barely move. Probably because you have to add your own sticks (people hate that). Or maybe they are just not a great idea.
Hmm. Where could I find some otherwise useless pieces of wood . . .
If you cannot make your own simple wood rods, then chances are you would be better off with two pointed coat hanger wires and Gorilla tape. Quite an easy and fun project to make the wooden rods.
some people would rather spend their time making furniture rather than making tools.
I love making tools but I it is time-consuming when you have other projects going.
They are a great idea but limited tool budgets require prioritizing. It doesn’t mean there is little interest and they aren’t on the future purchase list but the dollars for them compete with other tools or books from LAP/Crucible. Heck, there are some LAP books I’ve wanted for a while but you keep publishing new ones that bump those down the list. Same with tools.
I’m glad you have promised to try to never stop publishing books (with a couple of exceptions) and I hope you continue to do the same with the Crucible stuff but I know sometimes you have to cut bait. You guys are basically my Christmas list every year. It makes it real easy for my wife and family.
Thanks for your quick reply and I understand what the production issues are for you. BTW I have the brass pinch rods as an original purchaser and they work fine. I Doubt that you will not have a good number of purchasers for the nice new DT guide. I have original Woodjoy DT guide that I bought when first produced and it is great to use so I am looking forward to having the CT guide as my new primary user.
“They also buy who only stand and wait.”
Cheers.
😉
Why do I need a lump hammer?
I’m copying from the store site below (and I’ll add that it’s also useful for breaking out plaster in a controlled manner). Do you need this particular lump hammer? No – but I find having one of this size endlessly useful.
“For assembling dovetailed carcases and mortise-and-tenon frames, the lump hammer has no equal. Choke up on the handle to administer careful taps on delicate drawers. Grip the handle at its end and it can deliver a wallop that can persuade joints that have become too tight because of the glue.
“It is delicate enough to be used to strike wooden-handled chisels. Because of the weight of the hammer’s head, mortising requires less effort. It’s more about raising the hammer slightly and dropping its head on the chisel handle – low and slow. It sets and releases holdfasts with one authoritative blow.
“The hickory handle is shorter than what you’ll find on a typical sledge, making it ideal for woodworking instead of breaking up rocks. The octagonal handles are hand-finished and then waxed.”
I blame Megan for her incredible sales pitch.
If you ever redesign the pinch rods, make them match the proportions of the lump hammer head. That would look awesome!
