Megan FItzpatrick and I finished up two big loads of Crucible lump hammers during the Memorial Day weekend and they are in the store now. Sorry, we sold out. More on the way next week.
We have greatly increased production (yay) thanks to bringing on some more help with assembly. I’ve built some new jigs that improve the handle production – some of the slots for the wedges weren’t perfectly centered. We’ve also changed the way we add the Crucible logo to save on tooling costs (and it looks crisper). And we modified the shape of the hammer head’s eye (it’s a right nutty shape) to cut out a step with handle assembly.
It’s crazy. We’ve made so many of these lump hammers that I can grind heads in my sleep now. But we’re still finding ways to improve the process and the product.
The Crucible lump hammer is $85 plus shipping. You can purchase yours here.

Is my version 1 going to become a collector’s item? #retirementplan
If anyone ever does a type study of these lump hammers, then I’ll know that Crucible has arrived…..
My very favorite type study was for the Black and Decker Workmate. Just masterful.
I’m looking for a type I, first gen., with shou sugi ban handle. These were made in small batches at the Indianapolis facility according to my research…
Chris,
Thank you for your help with my hammer.
Made my day! Stand up people and service.
Glad your hammer arrived. You were the victim of a swirl of crazy and mis-attention at the warehouse. Apologies.
My lump hammer has been rendered technologically obsolete.
So now that these are available… they just don’t seem *cool* anymore.
(In seriousness, glad to hear the Crucible team is finding ways to ramp up on this product and more comfortably fill the demand! Best of luck — maybe a batch or two down the line I’ll place an order… for now, my shop is out of commission until we complete some work on the house!)
I finally broke down and bought one of these. Do I need this? I have no idea. Yes, I am a lemming.
Hmm… these have been posted for almost two hours now, and there is not a tag yet. I can only surmise that the internet is down in Covington, and Chris can’t get the notice updated. (REALLY like my gen 1 lump hammer. Wouldn’t ever trade it for one of these newfangled ones).
that actually said “SOLD OUT” tag, but I used the angle brackets, so it was processed as commenting and did not show up.
When this blog post turned up late last night I immediately went to the Crucible Tool shop and added a lump hammer to my cart, went to check out, got as far as entering the payment information, but then I felt guilty. The school shop was still a mess and my grades weren’t finished yet.
I promised myself that if they were still available today, I’d order as soon as I finished all of my dreaded last-day-of-school chores.
Oops.
