  3. Not quite so prosaic or deep as the above, but I do have an amusing family story. In Great Depression era Appalachia, my then very young mother, asked her mother who the entire ham was for that just came out of the smokehouse. My grandmother answered ‘hard times’. Later that same day a hobo came by asking for some water from the well. My mother obliged the gentleman and during small talk inquired about his name. The hobo answered ‘hard times’–I guess it was a common expression of the time. My mother brightened up and said “we have something for you!”. She then promptly ran into the house, grabbed the ham and gave it to the hobo.

    Even if it is more family myth than truth, the anecdote is still good for a chuckle. 🙂

  6. Back in 2013, Tony Donoghue won a Sundance Film Festival award for his short animated film Irish Country Furniture. I remember being blown away by the film; the most charming thing going. Can’t find it on the web anymore, for love nor money.
