Marilyn of She Works Wood fame asked for a video that shows how the crab lock (aka grab lock) works. So here it is. This lock was made for this tool chest by blacksmith Peter Ross. Unlike many commercial crab locks from the 20th century, this one operates super smooth.

Love Peters work
Roy Underhill and Peter Ross did a show on locks last year.

Bwah ha, ha, ha!! Oh my, what a post title. 😀 Thanks for the video .. I think. 😉 That’s so cool and now I know why its called a crab lock.

Enjoy!
Peter’s work is splendid! I wonder how many gashes in the flesh will need treatment? The protrusion inside the chest appears as an accident waiting to happen.
Low and behold, I found a very ATC looking chest at the Anheuser-Busch stables. It does not have a crab lock, but there’s not much denying the heritage…..
