I am pleased to announce that “Calvin Cobb: Radio Woodworker!” by Roy Underhill has arrived in our Indianapolis warehouse and is shipping out to customers as I type this.
Our warehouse has set up a special line in its packaging department to fulfill “Calvin Cobb.” If you ordered your copy before today it will be in the mail to you by Friday. (Administrative note: Some customers will receive two notifications that their book has shipped. Please do not be alarmed. You will receive the correct number of books – not twice as many as you ordered. It was a small computer snafu.)
If you haven’t yet ordered “Calvin Cobb: Radio Woodworker!” you have 17 more days to do that and receive free domestic shipping. After Nov. 29, 2014, shipping will be about $7. Also good to note: Orders made now will make it to their destination for Christmas.
The book is $29 and can be ordered here.
This morning I drove the 100 miles to our Indianapolis warehouse to pick up some copies and it was well worth the drive. The book – every bit of it – is impressive. The matte dust jacket looks fantastic, the interior printing job is crisp and even the cloth headbands on the spine match the cloth cover and internal stamping. I think you will be impressed with the physical product.
As those of you who have already read the electronic version of the book know, you know the story is great fun to read.
Thanks to everyone who worked on this crazy project – from Roy who signed on for a wild ride, to editor Megan Fitzpatrick, designer Linda Watts and cover illustrator Jode Thompson.

P.S. For our international customers and those who buy our books through other sources, such as Lee Valley Tools, Henry Eckert and Lie-Nielsen Toolworks (to name a few). Their books are en route, but we have no information on when they will arrive or when those vendors will begin selling them.
For some reason, the title of this book always makes the Dan Ackroyd character on SNL from several years ago pop into my head–Fred Garvin, Male Prostitute.
Not to criticize, but I feel like that dust jacket should be a little more foxed and dog-eared for the time travel to be complete.
I don’t recall LAP having a book released with a slip cover (although I may have missed it), but do recall commentary on the general like/dislike of a cover. Why the change for Calvin Cobb? This is not a criticism; the cover is great, and adds to the work.
“Make a Joint Stool from a Tree” also has a dust jacket.
The short answer is as to why we did it is, “That’s what Roy wanted.” When we publish a book it’s a partnership with the author — they have a lot more say in the production qualities of their books. After being presented with all the options (and their costs), I recommended a dust jacket for this project and Roy signed off.
It’s not a sea change for Lost Art Press. Peter Galbert’s book won’t have a dust cover (probably). It will have an even crazier cover….
_Indianapolis_ warehouse, hmmmnnnnn. Wish I’d known you’d be around, I could have offered you a libation at the faculty lounge, aka Triton Brewery.
When I check on my order through the USPS tracking site it just says, “Shipping Label Created” as of November 12. Any idea when it will actually ship?
Thanks! I’m anticipating my copy and giving my brother a copy!
Ted,
We don’t see any order in our system with your name. We’ve sent you an e-mail to figure out the problem.
I have the same complaint as Ted. Bought mine on the 13th and and the USPS tracking number says the same thing.”Shipping Label Created on 11/13″ PayPal indicates the purchase was made.
Don,
USPS does not offer much information on media mail shipments. All of the pre-publication orders were shipped out on Nov. 13. It might take extra time to get to the West Coast because of the distance the holiday season.
My guess is your book will show up in the coming week.
For whatever reason, I have detailed tracking info on mine:

After seven years of mailing out packages via Media Mail, all I can tell you is this: Some USPS employees scan the packages. Some do not. Sometimes you get tracking information. Sometimes you get squat.
