Woodworker Jonas Jensen finished making his horse-based dye from “To Make as Perfectly as Possible” and has posted the results on his blog here.
The dye, according to A.-J. Roubo, is made by straining horse urine through horse dung. The results (and the smell) were surprising. Check it out.

Exciting! Being from Oklahoma, I can assure you that what went into the horse will effect what comes out of the horse. Maybe red clover or big blue stem would yield more rouge hue.
As a young man I read an article by Sherby that insists that a particular ancient smith quenched swords in the urine of a redheaded boy or in that of a “three-year-old goat fed only ferns for three days.” (Scientific American Feb, 1985)
So I take a Han Solo – like view on ancient hokum.
Jonas doesn’t mention whether or not he is married.
I suspect not.
I’ll stick with stains and dyes, thanks very much.
I am (surprisingly enough) still happily married 🙂

Interesting but…..I think I will stick with my store bought stuff.
