Oh. My. Goodness.
Now you’ve made me drool all over my keyboard.

That’s one sturdy bench! What’s the next one? Maybe an Ikea English 😉

Chris,
Are you going to add a sliding deadman, or are you keeping true to Plate 11?

Pure plate 11. Down to the dog holes baby

WOW!!!! That is beautiful!!!! Thank you so much for sharing with us! 🙂

Is that Jameel’s northfield? You lucky sonofa*****.

That’s one damn sexy French wench!
Still waiting on my oak bits to make their way into yank territory.
I think we had this conversation, but how strongly do you feel about 5/8″ drawbore pegs as opposed to 1/2″ or 3/8″

Hey Niels,
I vastly prefer the 5/8″ because they are almost indestructible during insertion. Stop snickering. You can sledge them dang hard and they don’t explode. Be sure to cut loooong tapers on them. My pegs were 6″ long and I tapered 3″ of the length down to about 1/8″.

Beautiful, really nice.

Looks like you glued and wedged the mortices. Does that mean the bench goes with the house?

No way George. I’ve gotten benches like this out of my shop.

I noticed that your wedges are at the sides of the tendon, not splitting it as Roubo suggests; or have I misread him? Did you widen the mortice as well?

Wesley,
I went off the reservation on that detail. Roubo says to split the tenon, but I have seen more benches where they wedged NEXT to the tenon – like an 18th c door joint.
Forgive me A.-J.

Very nice! Love seeing the pics as they go together, one by one!

Amazing!! After reading and trying it I can’t imagine a bench without flush legs like that. Thank Chris stopping me from building a less useful workbench.

Wow how much does that thing weigh?
Loading...
A lot. More than any other bench I’ve built. I’ll calculate the weight when I’m done.

Kinda makes the original Roubo look like a spindly 12-year-old, doesn’t it?

See! Wasn’t that more fun than nail boxes or chairs? I love it! A bench for the ages!

What is the story behind that nice Northfield jointer? Did you have to convert it to single phase?
Loading...
I bought that from Jameel Abraham when he upgraded to a 16″. He did the conversion to single phase.

I have one comment and two questions:
Wow! Awesome, beautiful bench!
Did you assemble that heavy bench yourself, or did you have some help with the heavy lifting?
Do you have to be able to speak French to use it?

Assembled it myself. Think like an Egyptian. Levers, ramps, gravity etc.
I can read French OK. Speaking it, however….

Looks great. How did Roubo deal with checking?

It’s so lovely, I’m having a hard time keeping my eyes off of it. The wood alone makes me weep.
What a truly spectacular bench, and history it already has and will gain perhaps will inspire a book similar to “The Joiner and Cabinet Maker”? /plant_seed

This bench looks SO fricking cool!!

That’s quite a persuader. Were you hitting the rafters with it? And with all your research did you figure out what the proper beer is for post assemble reflection?

Your bench looks good and solid. What are the dimensions?

Length 8′. Width 22″. Height 99″ (just kidding, it’s 33″)
