I am pleased to announce that Lee Valley Tools, Lie-Nielsen Toolworks and Tools for Working Wood will be carrying Christian Becksvoort’s first book with Lost Art Press: “With the Grain: A Craftsman’s Guide to Understanding Wood.”
The book should be in our warehouse (um, John Hoffman’s garage) in the next two or three weeks.
You can order “With the Grain” from the Lost Art Press store for $25 with free domestic shipping until Feb. 20. After that date, shipping will be $7.
If you haven’t read about the book, check out our announcement here. And I wrote a follow-up here.

Glad to hear Christian’s book will be available up here 😉
How much of the book is specific to North American trees/wood? I’m trying to figure out if it’s a worthwhile purchase for someone in the southern hemisphere who seldom uses North American stock.
Dave,
The book is very specific to North American woods — those are what the authors knows intimately. So I’d pass on this title.
How useful would the new edition be to those of us with a copy of the original?
Mike,
Chris updated the entire book, specially the sections on wood movement and his methods for dealing with it.
However, I probably wouldn’t buy the new book for those changes.
Any plans for an E-Book version? I have many LAP publications made from trees but I find it rare these days to read anything not on my tablet. I appreciate the titles that have been offered via E-Book, but those have only served to have me purchase them twice. I hope you would consider having future titles available in both formats on day one. Thanks, Chris.

Hi Chris, I second the question about an E-book. Thanks, John….
