One of the people I have asked to read and edit Matt Bickford’s upcoming book, “Mouldings in Practice,” is toolmaker and woodworker Raney Nelson.
Raney, who makes planes under the name Daed Toolworks, has professional writing experience. But that’s not why I asked him to look at the book. I brought him into the fold because he will always speak his mind, even when it comes to a friend such as Matt Bickford.
After Raney read the book, he… well he tells it better than I can. Read this blog entry from Raney and find out for yourself.

P.S. If you read The Fine Tool Journal, you are going to find out all about Raney and his planes in the next issue.
If the book is anything like his blog, it’ll be great. Now to find a few of those “$5 antiques,” sharpen them and start sticking.
That’s interesting. About 3 weeks ago, I decided to ban all routers from my shop! Somehow I ended up having 4 routers in my collection. So far 2 of the 4 have been sold on eBay. The other 2 will be posted on eBay soon. I felt empowered by banning these screaming demons from my shop! I’m also finishing up a blog post about this topic. I haven’t used a lot of mouldings in my work, but I’m very interesting in Matt’s book.

Add me to this list of those ready to dump the routers. I hate the bloody things — the noise, the dust, the expense, the fussiness. I have two — count ’em, two — moulding planes, one hollow and one round, and they don’t match. Probably crap. But I find excuses to cob up something resembling a moulding with those two planes (and ignore the routers) nearly every time.
Not enough in the budget (last kid in college) to spring for a set of Matt’s work, so I’ll have to learn to make my own. Suggestions for a reference?
More routers (and bits) on Ebay…

Mark,
Try Larry Williams’ DVD entitled Making Traditional Side Escapement Planes. You can find the DVD at Old Street Tool’s web site or from Lie-Nielsen. He also has DVDs on sharpening and using these planes.

NO FAIR !!! You are just doing that to tease us !! I knew a girl like that once. I guess I want a copy of the book when it comes out.

I fortunate to met Matt this year at the show in Saratoga Springs, NY. Looking forward to his book.
