When I wrote “The Anarchist’s Tool Chest,” I stayed away from mentioning brand names when I discussed the tools that make up the core kit in the book. Instead of saying, “Buy these brands, and here are their item numbers,” I tried to give readers the information needed to evaluate tools on their own.
Despite this approach, several people have requested a list of all the brand names of tools in my chest and for my reasoning why I chose each tool.
I resisted these requests at first, but then I decided there was no harm in supplying the information. After all, these are my tools, purchased with my own money. And if you read enough of my blather then you probably could assemble the list on your own.
So we shot a 60-minute DVD titled “Inside the Anarchist’s Tool Chest.” Here’s what’s on it.
• A 55-minute movie where I discuss each tool in the chest, tell you who made it and discuss what I like about it.
• A 5-minute slideshow of 66 step photos of the construction of the chest that were not included in the book.
• An 11-page supplies list of the tools in my chest with direct web links to all of the suppliers of the tools – plus more notes on why I chose particular tools (and I offer a few alternate brands as well).
• A SketchUp drawing of the tool chest from the book.
Here’s a short trailer from the DVD:
As a special introductory offer, we will sell this DVD for $10 plus free shipping in the United States. This offer ensures that those readers who have already purchased the book won’t be punished for buying the book early.
After Aug. 31, the price will go up to its regular price of $12, plus media mail shipping.
To save on costs, the DVD ships in a paper sleeve – no fancy plastic case I’m afraid. We find those cases a waste of money and a hog of shelf space.

Christopher, ever thought about skipping the physical media completely and making a digital download available? It would save you on shipping trouble…unless you have got the girls trained already. Then again the whole child labor thing could get sticky.
We can do instant downloads, but the video files are fairly massive and our server is gerbil-powered. It’s an upgrade that is coming by the end of the year.
That’s what Amazon S3 is for 😉
Thank you for writing this book and now, making this companion DVD. As a novice woodworker trying to absorb all I can about getting the right (and best) hand tools, this book has felt like spending personal time with you and getting tons of questions answered about what tools to get and why. Which for me, is like having an expert guide lead me out of a bewildering forest of ignorance (mine). Now, with this DVD, getting a tour through your tool chest with some specific recommendations and reasons why you chose some tools over others just adds a whole new level of “really helpful” to the book. Thank you!
By the way, as an iPad user, the book download would be cool, but I really appreciate the finely bound book you’ve produced for our to hold in our hands.
Happy to say I just ordered my copy of the DVD… 🙂
I don’t suppose there are any channels available for us troublesome Canadians? I guess the digital download coming later would the be the answer…
…or the even more troublesome English? Do you have any UK or EU stockists for the DVD please? After reading the fabulous book I’m gagging to see the DVD. Thank you.
I will , of course, order my video to accompany my book…. But we all know what happens when Mr. Schwarz goes on and talks about a particular old tool and gives it praise…. ” The Schwarz Effect ” happens…. just look at the no. 80 cabinet scraper…. there are very few, anywhere, selling for twenty bucks anymore… However…. If these tools have proven themselves enough to warrant purchasing over a new tool, The monetary price may take a back seat to having a tool that will continue to function for another hundred years… so, like most, I will certainly take his advise into heavy consideration each time I open my wallet to expand my tool kit.
Awesome, looking forward to it. More than anything I am eager to hear the juice on plow planes.
Is there a way to purchase the DVD from Down Under?
Great idea and nice teaser clip. However, since Lost Art Press is not able to do international shipping for the time being (so I discovered) and your two book distributors, Lee Valley and Lie-Nielsen, are only doing books (hint, hint), what is the plan to deal with requests for this companion DVD for those of us who bought your book in places like…Canada?
We will be reaching out to our retailers to see if they want to carry the DVD. It’s up to them, of course.
Just finished watching it. Had a great time. I wish I could buy stock in a few of the tools you mentioned 😉
“This offer ensures that those readers who have already purchased the book won’t be punished for buying the book early.”
Does this mean that the second printing of the book will come bundled with the DVD or am I reading to much into that comment?
Nope. The second printing will not be automatically bundled with the DVD. They will always be available as separate products.
The special offer removes all shipping charges so that early adopters aren’t stuck with paying shipping on both the book and the DVD.
LAP, thank you so much for the quick delivery of the DVD, received it today and really enjoyed watching it. Another great production from LAP. Absolutely love the book and now DVD.
I really appreciate all that Chris has done to promote the craft for those of us who feel as he does.
Well done!
