This June I’m returning to Germany to teach two classes at Dick GmbH, which runs a beautiful woodworking school in Bavaria outside Metten. My short course on sawing is fully booked, but there are still three two spaces left to build the tool chest from my forthcoming book “The Anarchist’s Tool Chest.”
The class runs from June 22-26 and costs only 480 Euros, a bargain for a week-long class. The Dick facility is first-rate and very hand-tool oriented. All of the benches are massive, and each student is allotted a box of tools during the course, which are of excellent quality and sharp.
And the region itself is gorgeous. I stayed in the town of Deggendorf, a quaint river city with lots of nice little restaurants and far too much great gelato. Last year I went out to dinner with the students almost every night, a pattern I hope to repeat again this year. I learned a lot about European-style woodworking, weiss beer and venison.
For more details on this class, visit the Dick web site here.

Chris,
Germany sounds great but unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be going there any time soon. I’ll bite and ask; are there any plans to offer the "Tool Chest" class here in the states? I’m sure many, many people will be wanting to know the answer.
Take care,
Michael
Chris,
I share Mike’s sentiment. I love tool chests and would be thrilled to take this class. Although I might have to build a bigger shop, I’m rapidly running out of available floor space for tool chests.
Best,
Zach
Any ideas on how to get it back to the US?
Chris,
My last tour of duty in Germany was in the Oberpfalz area just north of Munich in Vilseck. Loved it! If you are planning a side trip or two, visit Passau which was built on taxing the salt industry. There was also a great tourist poster of all the Bavarian biers that are produced by local communities. Many are in that area. I tried to taste them all but failed. Try to visit the monastaries which still produce their own beers…so fresh and usually accompanied by delicious food. Dunkel Hefeweissen (like eating a loaf of bread) is still my favorite regardless of the brewery. Enjoy! I just wish that this opportunity had been available several years ago when I was in that area.
Gruss Got,

Chris,
I’ll echo Chet’s sentiments about Germany. I too was stationed there for many years. I see that Metten is right down Autobahn-3 from Regensberg. If you haven’t been there yet and have the chance I’d highly recommend it, the Altstadt is beautiful. And Google “Regensberg Wahalla” while you’re at it, also worth a visit.
Kind Regards,
Eric
