“Joiner’s work is noisy, and they can’t talk while carrying it on, and that may account for joiners not being such politicians or thinkers as shoe-makers or tailors.”
— A London joiner with 21 years of experience, quoted by Henry Mayhew, The Morning Chronicle, July 11, 1850
I find it interesting that the joiner thought of his craft as a noisy one in 1850, when most of us today using tools and methods from his time talk up the quiet peaceful nature of the work. I guess having a dozen or so people in the room planing, sawing, hammering, mortising etc… would probably be too loud for easy conversation but still I can’t imagine it being loud compared to modern home construction site.
