Bad spade bits, Part 2. The spade bit on the left has been surface ground. The grinding creates the sharp arrises that do a lot of the cutting. This bit cuts quickly and cleanly. The bit on the right hasn’t been ground. As a result, its edges aren’t sharp. This bit will cut slowly in softwoods and barely at all in hardwoods.   I avoid unground bits.

I use spade bits quite a lot and have tried about a dozen brands. Price doesn’t make much difference. Some suck and some are great. Today I spent a couple hours examining all my spade bits with a magnifier to see if I could find out *why* some sucked so hard. The No. 1 culprit: Small flats on the cutting spurs, which I circled in red. These can be remedied with a file, but you shouldn’t have to. It’s just a setting on the surface grinder.  Culprit No. 2 tomorrow….

Good news: After battling production delays and cotton shortages, “The Woodworker’s Pocket Book” is complete. We hope to begin shipping next week. Sorry for the delays and thank you for your continued patience.

This arrived today and it was so worth the wait. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings have made so many of my favorite records, and this — 48 new songs — is like a drunkard’s dream. The accompanying songbook includes all the guitar chords for the songs.

Boxing up the first batch of the Crucible Bench Squares for shipment to our warehouse. They should be for sale by the weekend.

If you are in the dry season (we are), the handle of your hammer might come loose. I made a short video of how to add a steel wedge on our blog today.
